Congrats on River’s adoption October 20, 2020!
Hi everyone, I’m River! I’m a super happy guy looking for his forever home. My foster parents think I might be a shepherd/Labrador mix, with a little bit of chow thrown in (I have purple spots on my tongue - can you believe it!?).
I’m friendly, but a little shy with new people. I warmed up more quickly with my foster mom than with my foster dad but after a few days, I was cool with him too. I also live with a one-year old baby and I like to give her kisses and she likes to pet me. My foster mom says I’m a bit of a “bull in a china shop” and so maybe would do best in a home with older kids or no kids, just because of my size and energy. I’m a master of the hand nudge (pet me!), the leg lean (pet me more!!), and I love to lay my big head on laps (more pets please!). My goal in life is to be a lapdog.
I’m a pretty energetic guy! I need about two walks a day, or maybe a trip to a dog park or doggy daycare to get my energy out. I’m medium to high energy, so my ideal forever family would be pretty active. I LOVE playing ball and I’m pretty good at fetch (I’m learning to give the ball back). If you don’t mind a little slobber, I’d love if you’d throw a ball for me!
I currently live with a small dog and two tiny dogs who are all much smaller than me. I’d love to have a dog my own size to roughhouse with. The dogs in my foster home are too small for that, but we all co-exist peacefully. I just started doggy daycare and while I was a little shy at first, towards the end of the day I was playing with the other pups. There aren’t any cats in my foster home, so I don’t know about cats.
I enjoy going for walks and for a strong dog, I don’t pull much. I also don’t react to the dogs or people we walk by. My only bad habit on walks is that I tend to weave back and forth smelling all the smells, but my foster mom says I’m otherwise a pretty good leash walker!
Right now, I’m working on gaining a little weight, as I’m a little under-weight for my size. I’m also working on manners, like not barging through doors and not jumping up on people. I know “sit” and “down.” My forever family will need to continue to enforce manners with me so I’m not always a bull in a china shop. I’d love to take an obedience class! I’m very eager to please and food motivated, so I learn things quickly.
I’m crated at night and sometimes during the day if my foster parents leave or need a break. I like my crate and am happy to go into it for a snooze. I’m quiet in my crate, except if I hear the people walking around, and then I whine a little. I don’t bark much in the house, but I do guard the backyard and will bark at people and dogs who walk by. I’m potty trained as well, but had a few small accidents in my first week in my foster home due to being excited or nervous (not because I don’t know to potty outside). My foster parents say dogs usually stop having this problem once they feel more comfortable and settle in, so they assume this won’t always be an issue for me.
Let’s play ball!
