Nia the hound found her forever family on October 2, 2020!
Nia sleeps in her crate overnight and wakes around 6-7 am with a few gentle whines. She's always SO excited to see her people and the resident male dog in the morning and start her day! We go a quick potty trip before coming in to have breakfast. Nia loves food and will sit very nicely while you get her bowl ready; she loves food so much we use a slow feeding bowl to help her pace herself. She's allowed to roam freely for about an hour after our morning potty trip where she and the resident dog will usually have a good play session - then goes into a puppy pen for a few hours when I start work. She does wonderful in her playpen, she'll sleep, play with toys on her own, loves to look out the window :) She'll whine every so often when she thinks she's missing out on something but quiets with a firm "No" or self-soothes after a few minutes.
She's doing very well with potty training and we're accident free for over a week! We go out anytime she leaves her crate or every 3-4 hours otherwise, except overnight (she'll sleep through the night a full 8 hours).
Did I mention she loves food? Since she's very treat motivated, she picks up on commands quickly! She's learned Sit, Shake, Down, and Touch and is doing great with her manners around using them. She'll sit at the door before going out, sit when we get in the elevator, and sit at the intersection before we cross the street. Nia loves to be near her people and is a huge cuddlebug with the resident dog; I frequently find them sleeping on top of each other. She's a little clumsy with her growing body, hilariously talkative, and could not be sweeter!
Nia makes so many friends :) She can be a little shy at first but she loves to flash her puppy eyes and wag her tail at people we pass and warms up quickly when they come to say hi. She's met kids ages 2-11 and been very sweet with them all! She is a typical teething puppy and can be mouthy when excited so this should be kept in mind when she meets new people, especially children.
Like all puppies, she has her zoomie moments but overall she's lower energy for her age and tires quickly - a play session or moderate walk (20-30 minutes) will put her in snooze mode. She walks well on a leash but can be a little stubborn when she's scared, sometimes new surfaces or approaching figures can make her a little nervous. She'll come with some gentle coaxing and is improving; she'll just need your continued support to build her confidence!
She loves her fellow dogs and does a great job giving and responding to play cues. She's submissive in play and will quickly offer her belly when meeting new dogs, will sometimes retreat to hang out with me and just watch the others play if she's overwhelmed with bigger pups or big groups of dogs. She hasn't met any cats.
Nia hasn't spent much time alone (3-4 hours was the longest stretch) but she's done great. For shorter leaves I let her roam within her puppy pen, for longer times I'll fully crate her. She tends to sleep most of the time but also enjoys looking out the window or chewing on a toy/bone. Some small whines or whimpers at first that settle pretty quickly and she'll sometimes bark at foreign noises or knocking sounds, but nothing that's been sustained or too bothersome for my neighbors.
Nia's been a complete delight to foster and will make her future family so incredibly happy! This goofy, loving, soulful eyed gal is ready to find her home!
